This is a demo of a bell siphon I built in collaboration with a couple of engineering professors. There are certain cases where it would be nice to be able to create a siphon without any intervention, a self-priming or automatic siphon: the next level of siphonry. It's built out of an acrylic sheet and a piece of clear pipe. Thanks to Rolf Hut ...

Primed Siphon: liquid moves until the water levels are equal- curious combination of the effects of gravity, molecular cohesion, and atmospheric pressure. The tube is hollow and pre-filled with water, and the spherical shells on each end are cups also full of water. With each end of the tube submerged into each cup, atmospheric pressure holds the water in the tube until the siphon can be placed to connect the glasses. ➡️ Follow the link my profile for more info and where to get many of the amazi

Explaining Physics on Instagram: "The video demonstrates siphoning, a process driven by gravity and the principle of fluid dynamics. For a siphon to work, the hose must be completely filled with liquid (primed), and the outlet end must be lower than the liquid surface in the supply tank (the motorcycle fuel tank). Gravity pulls the liquid down the lower side of the hose, creating a partial vacuum at the highest point (the arch of the hose). The atmospheric pressure acting on the open surface of

In this simple presentation, we see how siphons work. I asked Alex and Max to pay attention and tell me at what level should be water so that it starts going through the straw. So they did, had fun and learned something new. A siphon can lift the water up without a pump, and that is the reason it has been used for thousands of years. But even today it is not 100% clear why it works. Perhaps the challenge is there because a few processes are happening at the same time for siphons to work. On the
