In 34 years as professor of nursing at UCSF, Afaf I. Meleis, PhD, DrPS(hon), FAAN, L, worked to improve conditions for nurses, so they in turn can provide better care to patients. Among her accomplishments was establishing a PhD for nursing in 1984, a rarity in education at the time. Her legacy stems not only from educating about nursing, but changing the way it’s perceived and practiced - work that she continues as Dean Emeritus and professor of nursing and sociology at the University of Pennsy
