Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator, became the symbol of resistance against Rome. Once enslaved and forced to fight in the arena, he escaped in 73 BCE with about 70 companions, seizing weapons and defeating Roman forces sent to crush him. His rebellion swelled to tens of thousands of slaves, men and women seeking freedom. For two years, Spartacus defied the might of Rome, winning battles with brilliant tactics.
