The Speculum Oris: The Force Feeding Device 💔 During slavery, the speculum oris — a metal device originally meant for medical use — was turned into a weapon of control and cruelty. Enslaved Black people were forced to endure this tool as their mouths were pried open with metal screws, tearing the flesh and dislocating jaws. It was often used to punish those who “talked back,” or to force-feed enslaved Africans who refused to eat — many choosing death over bondage. This device represents more th
